What if I miss my sports event? What is Playback?

We think sport is best watched live, but we understand that life sometimes gets in the way and time‐zones aren't always on your side. Sky Sport Now has a handy Playback feature on our devices that lets you scroll back up to 24‐hours to watch programmes at a time that suits you.Simply scroll back through the TV Guide on and click play.

You can scroll back up to 24‐hours ‐ all programmes that have started in the last 24‐hours should still be there for you to watch. Please always check the start date of the programme (not the event, as these times often differ) before relying on this feature. The programme must also have finished before it becomes available on Playback.

If you do miss both the live event and the Playback option, Sky often schedules replays of the big events. Check the programme guide for replays.

Please note that playback and replays may not be available for special or 'pop up' events and our Pay-Per-View passes have replays available for 3 days from the start of the live Pay-Per-View event.

24 Hour Playback is available on all Sky Sport Now devices.

Are replays included with passes or can I record?

There are often scheduled replays of events or matches on channels in the hours or days after the event. Selected replays of big matches are also made on-demand in our Features section. These are included in your pass.

A good way to catch something you have missed in to use the Playback feature. Simply search back through the TV Guide to see what matches are still available. You can scroll back up to 24‐hours ‐ all programmes that have started in the last 24‐hours should still be there for you to watch. Please always check the start date of the programme (not the event, as these times often differ) before relying on this feature. The programme must also have finished before it becomes available on Playback.

On our Pay-Per-View events you'll be able to watch a replay version of the event for up to 3 days from the start of the live event.

Replay and Playback functionality may not be available for special or 'pop up' events.

Technical

What is the video quality like? Can I watch in HD (High Definition)?

Sky Sport Now uses technology that adjusts to the best available download speed for your connection from 400kbps all the way up to HD 8000kbps depending on your device and connection. On PC/Mac you can manually select the speed to best suit your connection or manage your data usage. Alternatively you can select 'Best Available' and we'll keep checking your connection and adjust to your speed so it's always delivering the optimal viewing experience.

HD (1080p) is available where the stream is 8mbps and above. To check out our video quality, go to our website and try the available highlights.

How much data is this going to use?

The average 2 hour event will be roughly more than 7GB on the best quality, but this changes depending on the quality of streaming you're using. Based on the average broadband plan in NZ, watching the occasional game should be fine but it's probably a good idea to have a good look at your plan and think about how much you're planning on watching, and adjust your data plan accordingly. If you're going to be using your phone to stream on a 3G or 4G network, please be mindful of the data usage and use lower bitrates if needed.

Will my internet connection be ok?

You'll need a broadband internet connection of 5Mbps or higher, which is less than the national average broadband connection speed to access Sky Sport Now at the highest video quality over Wi‐Fi or Ethernet. If you have a broadband speed of 5.0 Mbps or more and your device meets the requirements outlined in the technical FAQs, you should be able to enjoy Sky Sport Now at the highest video quality (8000kbps HD), but that will depend on other uses of your broadband connection at that time. To measure your internet connection, go to speedtest.net and check your download speed. Remember lots of factors including other internet use in your home can affect video quality and this is a guide only.

Troubleshooting

Why is my video not playing?

Make sure you press play and wait a minute or two for your video to load. If you are on PC/Mac and your video still doesn't play, then your issue might be due to the following:

  • Low Memory ‐ if your computer has less than the minimum 512 MB of memory or you are running many applications at the same time, close all other applications before playing a video.

  • Low Bandwidth ‐ it is required that you have either a Cable or DSL modem providing at least 750 kbps download speed. Contact your internet provider if you suspect you are getting less than this speed.

My internet connection is better than the recommended minimum, but my video is choppy or low quality, how come?

Sky Sport Now features adaptive streaming which dynamically adjusts the quality of video you receive based on the speed of your connection. If your connection speed fluctuates (many factors can contribute to this such as network congestion during peak times or other devices sharing your connection) Sky Sport Now detects this and adjusts the quality of the video stream to ensure you can continue viewing content without interruption.

By following the steps below you can override this feature on your PC/Mac and select the bit rate at which you want Sky Sport Now to deliver content, despite any fluctuations with your connection:

  • Sign in to Sky Sport Now on your PC/Mac.

  • Go to the Watch Live page, and hover off the 'Settings' icon on the video player control bar.

  • Select the drop drown arrow on "Best available" setting

  • Manually select a lower resolution.

Sky Sport Now will Now stream at a lower bit rate. If your connection can't cope with the bit rate you've selected, you may experience choppiness in the video playback.

If your video playback is choppy with ""Best Available"" checked in the video quality settings, this may be an issue with your computer's performance. To resolve, please try the following:

  • Make sure your computer is up to date with the latest patches and your video card's drivers are current

  • Disable hardware acceleration as it can cause choppy video playback

  • Increase virtual memory as it can improve video playback

  • Check your anti‐virus or firewall settings to make sure they allow traffic from Sky Sport Now

If you're unsure of how to do any of these things, please consult a qualified computer technician.

I have adjusted the quality settings, so why is the video still choppy or low quality?

Typically, poor video quality will be related to one of the following things: Internet bandwidth, CPU utilisation, or local software or network conflicts (i.e. security app or content filtering/traffic shaping.)

If you're experiencing choppy or low quality video with Sky Sport Now on PC/Mac, please make sure you try accessing with different web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome. If you have the same issues across multiple browsers, please refer to the information below for troubleshooting tips.

You can use this free online tool to check your Internet connection's speed http://www.speedtest.net. Despite having a having a fast Internet connection, internet congestion can slow down the delivery of the stream, making it difficult for you to connect, or cause buffering. Often the interruption is temporary. If you repeatedly have problems connecting, please notify your ISP. There are often quick fixes they can make when they learn about your issue.

Closed networks, such as the ones found at university campuses, hotels, hospitals, businesses, etc., can cause connectivity issues with live streaming video if certain ports are blocked or restricted.
